Recently, there have been a number of new bands playing a naturalistic guitar sound that is reminiscent of 90s indie rock, but it’s rare to find a band that is as pure, fee, and, in all honesty, as silly as Women. The band, which hails from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is a true monster that alternately champions noise, pop, sweetness, and violence. After signing with local label Flemish Eye Records, the band released its debut album, “Women,” which was recorded by label mate Chad Van Gaalen, who also has releases on Sub Pop. The album received acclaim not only in Canada but also in the US, where it was released by the Bloomington, Indiana based label Jagjaguwar. In December 2008 the band made its Japanese debut through Contrarede.
Members of Women are also involved in numerous other bands and projects including label mates Chad Van Gaalen’s band and The Cape May and the dreamy experimental pop band Azeda Booth on Absolutely Kosher. |
